Dear Readers,
As publisher at Professional Trade Publications,
it is my sincere pleasure to introduce you to the pages
of Hawk & Trowel magazine.
Normally, new magazines do not launch during
diffi cult economic times. However, at Professional
Trade Publications it is our contention that there
is not a better time to start providing an industry
with refreshing and insightful new stories and
information. It’s this magazine that will give the industry valuable new ways to raise
its level of awareness while equipping contractors with sensible and profi table new
business opportunities.
In this issue is a sampling of the kinds of topics you can expect to fi nd in
every new edition of Hawk & Trowel. For starters, cementitious overlays, born in
the decorative concrete industry, provide plasterers with imprintable cementitious
toppings that can be applied in low- or high-build applications, delivering fi nishes
that can not only mimic other building materials but also off er a look that is one-ofa-kind.
Another focus of this issue is Venetian plaster — it’s our belief that products
of this kind not only challenge your creative abilities, they are what discerning clients
want. If you haven’t fi gured it out by now, customers appreciate quality and expect to
pay a good price for professional results, during a recession or anytime.
In addition to great features, the pages of Hawk &Trowel are also graced with
valuable insights from industry experts Myron Ferguson, Robin Raymer and Rory
Brennan. It is our hope that many of our readers, namely you, will also step forward
with ideas and comments that fellow tradespeople can learn from. After all, this
magazine is about you and the success of your profession.
A plastering contractor doing mostly commercial work recently told me: “Th is
industry is one of the least appreciated trades. People just take what we do for
granted.” Believe it or not, this comment is heard often in specialty trades — why?
Generally, it’s because contractors have slipped into a routine that, yes, maintains a
steady cash fl ow, but does little to stimulate a tradesperson’s creativity. Hawk & Trowel
hopes to change this … but it requires your enthusiasm and the desire to change the
way you do business. After all, a new generation is following in your footsteps. Let’s
make that trail an exciting one for others to follow.
Sincerely,
Bent Mikkelsen
